New Year’s Eve I celebrate in Abu Dhabi in our apartment together with classmates from the training. Each of us brings to the New Year’s Eve celebration something that is typical for their country for this holiday. I find out that the Russians eat the same potato salad, and the Serbs also bake some vanilla beans and caramel waffles. For New Year’s fireworks we go to a nearby beach, where nationalities of all kinds have been gathered, even those who celebrate New Year in different month. Shortly after midnight, my cell phone beeps telling me that my standby has been changed to flight to Phuket. I do not know who and why decided not to go to Thailand, but I thank them in advance. I could not wish for a better New Years gift. Usually, standbys end up flying into unpopular India or Pakistan, but I was lucky enough to fly to one of the most beautiful and most popular holiday destinations in the world. White sand, turquoise sea, breathtaking scenery, dolphins, cheap food, juicy fruit… Packed and ready within 15 minutes! Even my flight crew look pretty cool. We are all accommodated in the stunning resort Holiday Inn on Mai Khao Beach, where the terraces of the apartment open directly to the pool. But when we get there, it’s evening already, so we go only for a dinner. Next to the hotel, right next to the beach is one very authentic restaurant. We sit at the wooden tables with our feet in the sand, drink water from coconuts and eat rice from a large pineapple. Yammy, yammy, yammy! I hope you do not mind when I tell you that a three-course dinner does not cost me more than 6 Euros!

The next morning I get up early to enjoy as much sun and sea as possible. I spend the whole day alternating on the beach and by the pool, after all, you do not want to go anywhere else from such a resort. Moreover, I worked hard all year long so I guess I deserve a little peace in this oasis. I have a banana cooked in sweet coconut milk for breakfast, and for lunch I go back to the beach restaurant. In the end of the day, I have a funny souvenir from Phuket: After my nap under the sun, I have untanned print of my swimwear tie on my back! ☺
